A while back, I was working with an executive who’d just started using ChatGPT. Sharp, experienced, and very good at what he does — but like many leaders, he reached for the tool in the exact same way he approaches everything else: through the lens of his strengths.

We all do this.

The systems we build — including how we use AI — tend to reinforce what we already do well. If you’re a brilliant communicator, you lean on narrative. If you’re a numbers-first operator, you default to data. And while those strengths have likely carried you far, they also shape your blind spots. As I often say, your greatest strength is usually your greatest weakness in disguise.

This is where ChatGPT, when used well, becomes more than a productivity tool. It becomes a kind of executive bench — a set of perspectives you can call on to stretch your thinking, check your assumptions, and see the full picture.
